SHBBINF002 Maintain infection control standards - Nationally Accredited

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to maintain infection prevention and control during skin penetration treatments and ensure compliance with relevant state, territory and local council requirements. You will learn how to identify, manage and control infection risks in the workplace while following legislation, Australian Standards and industry guidelines.

This nationally recognised unit is accepted by the Department of Health for the beauty industry and is a prerequisite for Cosmetic Tattoo courses. It applies to beauty therapists working independently in salons, clinics, and cosmetic medical environments.

No prerequisites are required to enrol in or complete this course.

• Basic Language, literacy and numeracy skills in English (LLN)

• Victorian Student Number (VSN) – Victoria only: VSNs are issued to all students enrolled in Victorian schools and to students enrolled at a TAFE or in an accredited course with an RTO. For a copy of your VSN please contact your current school 0r call 1800 822 635.

• Unique Student Identifier (USI)

• Access to a functional pc or tablet device with internet access and Google Chrome internet browser.

• Webcam - You will need to have access to a computer that has
  an inbuilt web camera or software for an external web camera and microphone to complete online assessment tasks. Google Chrome is required when completing
  your online assessments. Some mobile devices can be used to record and upload information as well as complete the online assessments.

Unique Student Identifier (USI) – Australia wide:
A USI is a reference number made up of numbers and letters. It creates a secure online record of your nationally recognised training that you can access anytime and anywhere, and it’s yours for life.

To receive a Statement of Attainment when completing your course, you will need to give us a copy your USI number. Creating a USI is free.

If you don’t have access to an autoclave or a clinical environment, that’s okay. This course is explanation and knowledge-based only and does not require students to demonstrate the use of an autoclave, sterilisation equipment or practical procedures.

The course is designed to provide an understanding of infection control principles, sterilisation processes and industry best-practice requirements through online learning and theory-based assessments.

The course covers in theory and practice:

• Comply with infection control regulations and guidelines and related legal obligations.
• Monitor hygiene of premises.
• Maintain infection control for skin penetration treatments.
• Sterilise equipment and maintain steriliser
• Maintain awareness of clinic design for control of infection risks.

Integrated the maintenance of infection control with skin penetration technical skills that individually or in combination demonstrate:

• Identification of potential cross contamination risks,protecting self and client from infection risks

• Choosing and using an appropriate cleaning, disinfection and sterilising procedures for instruments, equipment and equipment attachments and work surfaces

• Use of correct steriliser operation procedures

• Disposing of waste and sharps

• Provided a written review of workplace compliance with relevant state or territory and local council laws, regulations and requirements for skin penetration treatments.

• Australian standards AS/NZS4815 and 4187 relating to infection control in office-based health care facilities

• Local council requirements for businesses offering skin penetration treatments

• Organisational policy and procedures relating to infection control

• Legal responsibilities in relation to infection control, sterilising, registration or business licensing, conduct of occupation, and maintenance of premises relevant to the role

• Standard and additional precautions as defined by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

• Industry codes of practice

• Aetiology of infection

• Sources of infection and means of transmission

• Risk management in relation to infection control

• Procedures and practices that support infection control measures and prevent infection transmission

• Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilising procedures

• Procedures for responding to spills

• Needle stick or sharps injury procedures for notification and response

• Impact of premises layout and workflow on infection control risks

• Manufacturer instructions in relation to cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising equipment and products
