Course Summary

This nationally recognised infection control unit is designed for professionals working in the skin penetration industry, including body piercing, tattooing, cosmetic tattooing, beauty and other personal service industries.

Course Prerequisites

No prerequisites requried.

Supervisor Report

As part of this course, some practical assessment tasks require a Supervisor Report to be completed by a suitable third-party observer. This person will observe you completing the required practical tasks and verify that they have been performed correctly and in accordance with industry standards.

Your Supervisor must have either:

  • Relevant experience working within the skin penetration industry, or
  • A recognised qualification in infection prevention and control.

Suitable examples of Supervisors include:

  • Co-worker
  • Employer or Manager
  • Supervisor
  • Trainer or Educator
  • Friend or colleague with at least 12 months' experience in the skin penetration industry

Examples of suitable industry representatives include:

  • Body Piercers
  • Cosmetic Tattoo Artists
  • Tattoo Artists
  • Beauty Therapists
  • Dentists or Dental Assistants
  • Nurses or Nursing Students
  • Doctors
  • Aged Care Workers
  • Other health professionals with infection control knowledge

Evidence Required

To confirm your Supervisor is suitably qualified or experienced, they must provide one of the following:

  • A current résumé (no more than 12 months old) outlining their relevant employment and industry experience; or
  • A copy of a relevant qualification or Statement of Attainment, such as an infection prevention and control qualification (or an equivalent qualification).

The purpose of the Supervisor Report is to ensure your practical skills have been observed and verified by someone with appropriate knowledge and experience, helping to maintain the integrity and quality of the assessment process.

What if i dont have access to autoclave? 

If you don’t have access to an autoclave or a clinical environment, that’s okay. This course is explanation and knowledge-based only and does not require students to demonstrate the use of an autoclave, sterilisation equipment or practical procedures.

The course is designed to provide an understanding of infection control principles, sterilisation processes and industry best-practice requirements through online learning and theory-based assessments.

Topics

The course covers in theory and practice:

  • Comply with infection control regulations and guidelines and related legal obligations.
  • Monitor hygiene of premises.
    Maintain infection control for skin penetration treatments.
  • Sterilise equipment and maintain steriliser.
  • Maintain awareness of clinic design for control of infection risks.

Assessment Tasks

This course is explanation-based and designed to assess your understanding and knowledge of infection control principles, procedures, and industry requirements. Assessment activities may include:

  • Multiple choice and short answer questions to demonstrate your understanding
  • Video response questions explaining processes, procedures, and your knowledge application
  • Written explanations of practical skills and workplace scenarios
  • Completion of an Observation Checklist with a Support Person to verify your understanding of required tasks and procedures

Please note: This course does not require you to perform practical demonstrations in a clinical environment or provide evidence of you independently completing procedures. The focus is on demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of the required skills and practices.
