RPL - Diploma of Cosmetic Tattoo - Application

This pathway is suitable for individuals who already have
practical experience in cosmetic tattooing or closely related beauty and skin
penetration work.

You may be suitable if you are:

• An experienced cosmetic tattoo artist
• Currently performing brow, lip, eyeliner, areola or scalp
  procedures
• Trained informally, overseas or outside a formal
  qualification pathway
• Confident in infection control, client procedures, and
  treatment planning
• Working in or operating a beauty or cosmetic tattoo business
  

This pathway is not designed for beginners or individuals
without hands-on industry experience.

To achieve this qualification through RPL, you must be able
to demonstrate competency across all required units of the diploma.

This means you must provide verified evidence of your
skills, which may include:

• Client treatment photos and videos
• Consultation and consent documentation
• Workplace procedures and records
• Evidence of infection control practices
• Case studies or treatment documentation
• Business or client management records (where applicable)

All evidence must clearly demonstrate safe, consistent, and
industry-compliant practice.

Your RPL application follows a structured assessment
pathway:

Once payment for the application is made

Step 1 — Self-Assessment

You complete a review of your experience against each unit
in the qualification.

Step 2 — Eligibility Review

Your self-assessment is reviewed to determine if you are
suitable to progress to formal RPL assessment.

Depending on your outcome you will then proceed with full enrolment into RPL.

Step 3 — Evidence Collection

If eligible, you will be requested to submit supporting
evidence of your skills and experience for each unit.

Step 4 — Competency Assessment

An assessor maps your evidence against the requirements of
each unit of competency.

Step 5 — Outcome

You will be advised if you are:

Competent (qualification issued), or

Required to submit additional evidence, or

Recommended for gap training

RPL outcomes are based strictly on demonstrated competency,
not time in the industry alone.

SHB50321 Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing

To be issued this qualification, you must complete nine (9)
units of competency in accordance with nationally recognised packaging rules.

This includes:

• 4 Core Units (mandatory)
• 5 Elective Units (selected from defined groups)

All units must be achieved through either RPL or formal
training.

 Core Units (All Required)

The following core units must be achieved:

1. SHBBCOS001 Provide cosmetic tattooing consultations
2. SHBBCOS002 Apply knowledge of colour theory and pigmentology
   
3. SHBBCOS003 Incorporate elements and principles of design in
   cosmetic tattooing
4. SHBBSSC004 Identify the function and structure of skin and
   hair for cosmetic tattooing

These units form the foundation of safe and effective
cosmetic tattoo practice.

Elective Units (Selection Requirements)

Elective units are selected from defined groups as outlined
below.

Group A — Infection Control (Mandatory Selection Group)

You must achieve one (1) unit from this group:

HLTINF005 Maintain infection prevention for skin penetration
procedures

OR

SHBBINF002 Maintain infection control standards

Only one infection control unit is required.

This unit ensures you can safely manage hygiene, infection
prevention, and workplace safety in a skin penetration environment.

Groups B–F — Cosmetic Tattoo Specialisation Units

You must complete at least one (1) unit from this group,
which may include:

• Eyebrow cosmetic tattooing procedures
• Eyeliner cosmetic tattooing procedures
• Lip cosmetic tattooing applications
• Scalp micropigmentation procedures
• Advanced cosmetic tattooing procedures (e.g. 3D nipple and
  areola tattooing)

These units demonstrate your technical competency in
cosmetic tattoo treatments.

Group G — Business, Marketing & Industry Practice Units

Remaining elective units are selected from Group G, which
may include:

• Business operations and planning
• Financial management and budgeting
• Marketing and client acquisition (including social media)
• Workplace policies and compliance
• Sustainability practices

These units support professional practice and business
development within the cosmetic tattoo industry.

RPL is based on demonstrated competency, not experience
alone.

This means:

• You must show evidence of what you can do
• Evidence must align to national unit requirements
• All assessment decisions are evidence-based and verified

Across the qualification, you must demonstrate competency
in:

• Safe infection control and hygiene procedures
• Client consultation and treatment planning
• Cosmetic tattoo design principles and mapping
• Pigment selection and colour theory application
• Technical execution of cosmetic tattoo procedures
• Workplace documentation and compliance
• Professional practice within industry standards

• Submission of a self-assessment does not guarantee RPL
  approval
• All RPL outcomes are based on verified evidence of
  competency
• Additional evidence may be requested at any stage
• Gap training may be required where competency is not fully
  demonstrated
• The process is designed to maintain national training
  standards and client safety
